Doctoral student Abby Hayes received UNO Graduate Research and Creative Activity (GRACA) funding for her project, “Mixed methods assessment of restrictive housing conditions” under the supervision of Dr. Jenn Tostlebe.
Doctoral student Taylor Gonzales received UNO Graduate Research and Creative Activity (GRACA) funding for her project, “Process evaluation of a prisoner transitional living program for returning citizens” under the supervision of Dr. Jenn Tostlebe. This funding serves as the foundation for her dissertation work.
Congratulations to John Ursino, who successfully defended his dissertation prospectus, “Crowding, capacity, and reform: Exploring the dynamics of correctional policy,” on October 7th.

Doctoral Student Sadie Brewer won the Doctoral Student Poster Award at the Midwestern Criminal Justice Association (MCJA) conference. Her poster was titled, “Exploring discrepancies in juvenile justice legislation across the United States.”

ARC Lab Director, Dr. Jenn Tostlebe, was interviewed by Flatwater Free Press about social support in prison and the potential consequences of removing visitation rights from incarcerated individuals.
Congratulations to Drs. Zach Hamilton, Jenn Tostlebe, and Alex Kigerl who–along with their CU Boulder partners Drs. Pyrooz & Billings–received $889,480 in support from Arnold Ventures to create and test a parole decision making tool to reduce Iowa’s prison population.

ARC Lab Director, Dr. Zach Hamilton and PhD Candidate, John Ursino presented the findings of the Lancaster Jail Project to a public forum in Lincoln on August 8, 2025. The event was covered by 1011 Now.
Congratulations to Brian Gildea, who successfully defended his dissertation, RNR principles’ impact on probation officers’ supervision styles in a domestic violence court, on July 30th.
Brian is continuing as an Assistant Professor in the Criminal Justice Department at Colorado Mesa University.

Congratulations to Baylee Allen-Flores, who successfully defended her dissertation, What about those we left behind? The unintended consequences of decarceration for those still incarcerated, on July 25th.
This fall, Baylee will start her first semester as an Assistant Professor in the Criminology Department at DePaul University.
